FOR SALES SAKE MEDITATE!Vincent J. DaczynskiChapter 5 (cont.)
We know from psychology that the mind and body are interrelated. As you influence the mind so you produce an effect within the body, and vice versa. During the TM practice, as one experiences thoughts at increasingly finer levels, mental activity becomes less and less. As a result, physical activity becomes less. The body gains a very deep profound rest, much deeper than deep sleep.
Dr. Robert Keith Wallace, who did pioneer research studies at UCLA and Harvard Medical School on the physiological effects of practicing the TM technique, was the first scientist to identify a fourth major state of consciousness, unlike waking, dreaming or sleeping. His research was published in Science and Scientific American. Oxygen consumption, heart rate, skin resistance, electroencephalograph (EEG) measurements, and blood lactate were recorded prior, during and after subjects practiced the TM technique. What was found was that a unique physiological state occurred which was unlike the waking, sleeping or dreaming states of consciousness. The body entered into a very deep, profound state of rest. Yet, the EEG recording disclosed a wakeful condition characterized by marked intensification of alpha waves.
The novelty of these findings and those of subsequent studies conducted by other researchers has given rise to the hypothesis that a fourth major state of consciousness had been discovered.
Comparative physiological studies were made on subjects at rest and those who were practicing Transcendental Meditation. Transcendental meditattion produced a significantly deeper state of rest change. *Please see Fig. 3
The TM technique is the basis for increased dynamic activity. An archer draws his arrow back-in the opposite direction-a little bit, and then lets go. The arrow flies far. It is a simple technique which gives the dynamic thrust to the arrow. Likewise, the TM technique draws the mind back, to its source. This brings the entire system into contact with the powerhouse. Simultaneously, due to the profound state of rest that is achieved, the salesman is revitalized. This prepares the salesman for a day of dynamic activity. Further, because a day's work is met with a greater resource of energy, less fatigue occurs. Individuals practicing the TM technique report a need to sleep less.
Fred Gratzon, CEO, Telegroup, Inc., a long-distance discount carrier and one of the fastest growing companies in America, stated:
These benefits resulting from the practice of the TM technique have applications in many fields. General Franklin M. Davis-Retired, who presided over the U.S. Army war college, has become an outspoken advocate of the TM technique as a means to strengthen the armed forces. As a result, the TM program has been supported by the military. Also, the TM technique has been found to be usefull for pilots to eliminate fatigue and neutralize jetlag - something for the traveling salesman to consider. Joe Namath, Larry Bowa, Willie Stargell, Steve Carlton and Bill Walton - to name a few athlethes - have used the TM technique to give them the edge in fierce competition.
Allison Roe, former world record holder in marathon and kilometers, television producer, triatholon coach, and mother, had this to say:
Right from day one you see the improvements in your life - less stress and greater happiness. And from then it just gets better.
