1. Will practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique help stop cigarette smoking?

If my family experience is any indication, yes, most likely!

My mother was a chain cigarette smoker for over twenty years, averaging four packs of cigarettes daily; she would light her next cigarette from the one she was just finishing. My father smoked about one to two packs a day and my sister about one pack daily. I never smoked.

Within about one to two years after teaching my family the Transcendental Meditation technique they all stopped smoking. This is remarkable since none of them began the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique in order to stop smoking. They quit smoking naturally and spontaneously without will power or any effort on their part to stop smoking. Their quitting smoking was a by-product of their Transcendental Meditation practice. None of them ever returned back to cigarette smoking; they quit smoking for good.

A similar experience was shared by a friend of mine. He told me that the day after beginning the practice of Transcendental Meditation he was walking along and out of habit reached into his pocket and pulled out his pack of cigarettes. He lit up a cigarette and noticed it was not pleasant to him anymore; he told me he then questioned why he was smoking, and then knew that smoking was not part of him anymore. He said he threw the cigarettes into a trash barrel and never went back to smoking since.

Scientific research studies and anectodal accounts indicate that practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique is a way to help stop smoking; meditators have a lessening desire to smoke and experience a reduction in smoking. Many people completely stop smoking. The TM technique may provide one of the ways to quit smoking. Please read the chapter in this site on additional health benefits. If one smokes it is very difficult to quit smoking, but very easy to gain God consciousness and thereby not feel for smoking if smoking is bad. It is much simpler to attain God consciousness, much more difficult to go the righteous way. First thing is meditation and clear experience of Being in meditation which gives us what we are, the cognition of what the God omnipresence is.

2. My mind wanders too much, I donít think I could meditate.

It is the natural tendency of the mind to wander. The Transcendental Meditation technique uses this natural tendency of the mind; there is no attempt to resist this tendency - there is no effort involved in the practice of the TM technique. There is no attempt made to try to control the mind. Chapter 4 discusses this in detail. Chapter 4, The TM Technique

3. Do I have to sit cross-legged to meditate?

It is not necessary. The practice of Transcendental Meditation may be done seated in chair or couch with the back supported upright. This is how most people feel comfortable doing their practice.

4. Can I lay down to meditate?

No. If we lay down to meditate, out of habit, we may fall asleep.

5. Can I do the TM technique while driving?

The TM technique is practiced with the eyes closed. So, it is not done while driving, but it may be done in a car during car pooling, or in an airplane, on subways, busses, etc. However, the ideal setting would be in a quiet place where one would not be susceptible to distractions from traffic noise or interruption by people.

6. I usually eat dinner as soon as I get home, so why can't I meditate after dinner?

The practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique results in the physiology gaining a deep state of rest. Eating dinner requires the body to work on digesting the food; it would be counter-productive to digestion to put the body into a deep state of rest right after dinner. It is best to adjust one's meal schedule around the meditation time. The few minutes of meditation time will dissolve much of the day's work stress, and the dinner time with the family will be more wholesome.

Likewise, the TM technique is practiced in the morning before breakfast. It is done after the morning bathing and bathroom chores.

7. Can I wait a few hours and do the TM technique after my dinner digests?

This would place the TM practice too close to sleep time. TM is a technique which creates a state of restful alertness which revitalizes ones physiology and nervous system; so the alertness may interfere with going to sleep at the desired time. The TM technique is a preparation for activity, not sleep. After practicing the TM technique it is good to have a few hours before going to sleep.
